Your thyroid, a small butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck, plays a vital role in controlling metabolism, energy levels, and hormone balance. When this gland underperforms or becomes overactive, it can send subtle signals throughout the body. Recognizing these clues early can help you seek medical attention and prevent more serious complications. Here are five body signs that may indicate you need a thyroid checkup.

  1. Persistent Fatigue or Low Energy

If you’re getting enough sleep but still feel exhausted, your thyroid could be underactive (hypothyroidism). Reduced thyroid hormone levels slow down your metabolism, leading to constant tiredness and mental fog.

  1. Sudden Weight Changes

Unexpected weight gain or difficulty losing weight despite a healthy lifestyle may indicate an underactive thyroid. Conversely, rapid weight loss without major diet or exercise changes can point to an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).

  1. Changes in Hair, Skin, and Nails

Dry, brittle hair, thinning eyebrows, or unusually dry skin can be warning signs of thyroid imbalance. Weak or ridged nails may also develop when thyroid hormone levels are off.

  1. Mood Swings and Cognitive Issues

The thyroid affects brain chemistry. Depression, irritability, anxiety, or trouble concentrating (“brain fog”) are often overlooked but important indicators of thyroid dysfunction.

  1. Swelling or Discomfort in the Neck Area

A noticeable lump, swelling, or discomfort in the throat may signal a goiter or nodules, conditions associated with thyroid disorders. If you notice any neck swelling, consult a doctor promptly.

If you experience any of these symptoms consistently, it’s important to get a thyroid function test. Early detection allows for proper treatment, whether through medication, lifestyle changes, or specialist care.
