Former senator and rights activist Shehu Sani has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Kaduna Central Senatorial District following a decisive victory in the party’s direct primary election held on May 18, 2026.
The APC primary, conducted at the Senechora District Cabinet Centre, ended peacefully with party members casting their votes across the district. Shehu Sani secured a commanding lead with 9,105 votes, defeating his closest challengers, Yusuf Zailani who polled 1,021 votes, and Yerima Shettima who received 1,253 votes.
The victory marks a major political comeback for Shehu Sani, who previously represented Kaduna Central in the Senate from 2015 to 2019. Known for his outspoken views on governance, democracy, and human rights, the former lawmaker described the outcome of the primary as a reflection of the confidence party members still have in his leadership and political experience.
Speaking after the announcement of the results, Shehu Sani expressed appreciation to APC stakeholders, delegates, and supporters who contributed to his victory. He also commended Uba Sani and other party leaders for ensuring a transparent and peaceful exercise.
The senator-elect urged party members to remain united as the APC prepares for the 2027 general elections. According to him, internal unity and cooperation will be crucial for maintaining the party’s dominance in Kaduna State and strengthening its chances across the country.
Although some reactions surfaced online questioning voter turnout in parts of Igabi and surrounding areas, no official petitions or formal complaints were reported after the exercise.
Political observers believe the result further reinforces the APC’s influence in Kaduna, especially following similar victories recorded by the party in other senatorial districts.

With the APC ticket now secured, attention is expected to shift toward the 2027 campaign season, where Shehu Sani will attempt to reclaim the Kaduna Central seat and return to the National Assembly.
