Peter Obi Emerges NDC’s Sole Presidential Aspirant for 2027 Elections

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has emerged as the sole presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reports indicate that Obi was the only politician who purchased the party’s Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms before the deadline for the presidential race officially closed. The development has strengthened speculation that the former Labour Party candidate may become the consensus flag bearer of the party for the 2027 presidential election.

According to party sources, the NDC concluded the sale of forms for the presidential ticket while extending the deadline for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assembly aspirants by one week. Party officials clarified that the extension does not apply to the presidential contest, which has already been concluded.

The party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, reportedly confirmed that screening for aspirants who completed their nomination process would commence immediately in line with the party’s electoral timetable.

Obi’s emergence as the only presidential aspirant is expected to reshape political calculations ahead of 2027, especially as opposition parties continue efforts to build stronger alliances capable of challenging the ruling government.

Political analysts believe Obi’s growing influence within the NDC reflects his continued popularity among young Nigerians and supporters seeking an alternative political direction for the country. The development also comes amid ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s opposition bloc ahead of the next presidential election.

The NDC had earlier zoned its presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term, a move many observers interpreted as favouring Obi’s potential emergence as the party’s standard bearer.

While the party is yet to officially declare its presidential candidate, Obi’s position as the sole aspirant places him in a strong advantage as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum across the country.
