Presidency dismisses reports that President Tinubu plans to rename Nigeria or abolish Sharia Law, describing the claims as fake news.
The Presidency has dismissed as false and misleading a viral report alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia Law in the Northern region through a constitutional amendment.
In a statement issued on May 21, 2026, the Presidency described the report as fake news designed to mislead Nigerians, create unnecessary tension, and destabilize the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The statement, signed by Bayo Onanuga, said there is no truth whatsoever in the claims circulating online. According to the Presidency, President Tinubu has no intention of sponsoring any constitutional amendment bill allegedly code-named “Project True Federation.”
The statement noted that the story relied on anonymous sources and was part of a broader attempt by political actors to sow division and trigger political unrest in the country. Nigerians were urged to disregard the report entirely and avoid spreading unverified information capable of heating up the polity.
The Presidency also emphasized that constitutional amendment processes in Nigeria are guided by strict legal procedures and cannot be carried out arbitrarily. It explained that any amendment to the Constitution requires approval by a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly, as well as endorsement by at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.

According to the statement, President Tinubu remains focused on implementing economic reforms and delivering democratic dividends to Nigerians rather than engaging in divisive political distractions.
The Presidency further warned that misinformation and politically motivated fake reports are likely to increase as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum. Citizens were therefore advised to verify sensitive political information before accepting or sharing it online.
