The race for the 2027 governorship election in Abia State has continued to gather momentum as Chief Eric Opah emerged as a leading governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the party’s primaries.
Chief Opah, a businessman and political figure known for his involvement in transportation, aviation, shipping, and oil and gas logistics, recently intensified his governorship ambition with a formal declaration at the APC secretariat in Umuahia.
Reports indicate that he was received by party executives and supporters who expressed confidence in his vision for the state.
Speaking during his declaration, Opah said his ambition is driven by the desire to promote accountable leadership, economic growth, infrastructure development, and job creation across Abia State. According to him, his administration would focus on industrialization and youth empowerment if elected governor in 2027.
Political observers believe his emergence has strengthened the APC’s preparations to challenge the ruling administration led by Governor Alex Otti in the next election cycle.
The APC governorship contest in Abia has attracted attention in recent weeks following the withdrawal of other aspirants from the race. Reports revealed that Mascot Uzor Kalu stepped down from the contest after consultations with stakeholders, leaving Chief Eric Opah and other contenders in a stronger position within the party.
Supporters of Opah have described him as a candidate with strong private sector experience capable of attracting investment and improving economic opportunities in the state. During meetings with stakeholders and party members, the governorship hopeful reportedly emphasized unity, transparency, and inclusive governance as major pillars of his campaign agenda.
