Gov. Alex Otti Commissions Umuahia Central Bus Terminal, Names Facility After Prof. Nnenna Oti

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has officially commissioned the newly completed Umuahia Central Bus Terminal, marking another major milestone in the state’s ongoing infrastructure transformation drive.

The ultra-modern transport facility, unveiled during a colourful ceremony held on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, was named the “Prof. Nnenna Oti Central Bus Terminal” in honour of Professor Nnenna Oti for her integrity and courage during the 2023 governorship election in Abia State.

Speaking at the commissioning, Governor Otti described the terminal as a strong symbol of the “New Abia” and a clear indication that the state has moved beyond the era of limited infrastructure development.

According to the Governor, the project reflects his administration’s commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure capable of boosting economic growth, improving transportation, and restoring public trust in governance.

“The days of playing small are over in Abia State. What we are building is a modern transport ecosystem that supports commerce, mobility, safety, and economic prosperity for our people,” Governor Otti stated.

The Governor explained that the terminal, which can accommodate over 340 buses at once, forms part of the state government’s broader transportation reform agenda aimed at creating a safer, more organised, and efficient transport system across Abia.

He noted that after constructing and rehabilitating hundreds of kilometres of roads across the state, his administration has expanded its focus to include modern bus terminals, bus shelters, traffic management systems, and electric-powered buses.

Governor Otti further disclosed that Abia State currently operates 20 electric buses for intra-city and inter-city transportation, while an additional 20 electric buses and 30 new buses under construction would soon be delivered to the state.

He also revealed that similar transport infrastructure projects are ongoing in Aba, including the development of another bus terminal, construction of bus shelters, and major junction upgrades aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving commuter experience.

Explaining the reason behind naming the facility after Professor Nnenna Oti, the Governor praised her commitment to truth and fairness during the 2023 elections.

“Professor Nnenna Oti stood firmly on the side of truth at a critical moment in our state’s history. By doing the right thing despite enormous pressure, she restored public confidence in the electoral process and became a symbol of integrity for future generations,” he said.

Governor Otti also urged residents and community leaders to continue supporting government projects through prompt payment of taxes, stressing that taxation remains essential for sustainable development.

The Governor paid tribute to the late Commissioner for Transport, Comrade Sunny Onwuma, describing his passing as painful and unfortunate. He noted that the late commissioner played a significant role in initiating the bus terminal project and directed that a minute of silence be observed in his honour.

Earlier in his remarks, the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Austin Nmeregini, commended Governor Otti for what he described as people-focused and intentional governance.

He stated that members of the State Assembly were proud of the infrastructural transformation taking place across Umuahia and other parts of the state, adding that the Governor had restored public confidence in governance through transparency and effective project execution.

The Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, described the terminal as a major milestone in Abia’s transformation journey through purposeful leadership and strategic infrastructure investment.

According to him, the facility represents more than just a transport hub, as it symbolises urban renewal, modernisation, improved safety, orderliness, and economic development.

He added that the terminal would significantly reduce traffic congestion in Umuahia, improve passenger comfort and safety, create employment opportunities, and increase the state’s internally generated revenue.

Also speaking, Professor Nnenna Oti expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for the honour bestowed on her, while reaffirming the importance of integrity, accountability, and responsible leadership in public service.

She stressed the need for leaders to always stand on the side of truth and ensure justice prevails in society, noting that she remained committed to ensuring that votes counted during the 2023 elections.

On behalf of the project developers, the Managing Director of Planet Projects, Mr. Biodium Otunola, described the Prof. Nnenna Oti Central Bus Terminal as one of the best transport facilities ever delivered by the company in Nigeria.

He disclosed that the terminal features over 62 air conditioners, more than 30 public conveniences, 22 shops, commercial centres, a restaurant, and a motel designed to provide maximum comfort and convenience for commuters and visitors.

Otunola further revealed that the terminal forms part of a broader transportation reform initiative that has already delivered traffic lights, bus stations, road signs, and street lighting across Umuahia.
