VIDEO: Oshiomhole Blasts Senate President Over Nigeria’s Security Failures

Former Edo State Governor and Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has openly criticized Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio over the worsening security situation across Nigeria, accusing the National Assembly leadership of failing to adequately address the country’s growing insecurity challenges.

Speaking during a Senate plenary session on Wednesday, Oshiomhole expressed frustration over the increasing cases of banditry, kidnappings, and violent attacks affecting communities nationwide. He argued that despite repeated reports of insecurity, lawmakers have not taken sufficient action to hold security agencies accountable or investigate the effectiveness of government spending on security operations.

The senator referenced a reported incident in Kebbi State where armed bandits allegedly abducted about 200 students after security personnel were said to have withdrawn from the area. He described the development as alarming and indicative of deeper problems within Nigeria’s security architecture.

Oshiomhole called for a comprehensive audit of military and security funds to determine whether resources allocated to combating insecurity are being properly utilized. According to him, Nigerians deserve transparency and measurable results considering the enormous investments made in the security sector over the years.

During the heated debate, Oshiomhole reportedly directed sharp remarks at Senate President Akpabio, stating that the current security challenges have worsened under the present legislative leadership. He maintained that the Senate must take a more proactive role in addressing the crisis rather than merely issuing resolutions.

However, many lawmakers rejected the proposal for an audit of military expenditures. Instead, the Senate resolved to urge security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve inter-agency collaboration, and deploy modern technology to combat criminal activities across the country.

The discussion was triggered by a recent kidnapping incident in Kogi State. Security operatives successfully rescued a woman and her six-month-old baby during a rescue operation, although several other victims reportedly remain in captivity.

The exchange highlights growing concerns within the National Assembly over Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, as well as differing opinions among lawmakers on the best strategies to tackle the crisis. With kidnappings, bandit attacks, and violent crimes continuing to affect many regions, pressure is mounting on both political leaders and security agencies to deliver lasting solutions.
