Pipeline Explosion Ravages Owaza Community in Abia, Destroys Homes, Farmlands and School
Residents of Owaza community in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State have been left devastated following a high-pressure crude oil pipeline explosion that occurred in Umuololo village on Monday, June 22, 2026.
The explosion, which reportedly originated from a deteriorating section of a major oil pipeline transporting crude oil from the Imo River Flow Station to Port Harcourt and Bonny, caused extensive damage to residential buildings, agricultural lands, and public infrastructure.
Several families were displaced as the incident destroyed homes, plantain plantations, cash crops, and a local school, raising fresh concerns over the safety and maintenance of oil facilities operating within host communities.
Among those severely affected is Chief David Ogbonna, popularly known as Chiwowo, who lost his residence alongside significant portions of his farmlands to the disaster.
Speaking on behalf of the community, Chief Anselem Eletuo blamed the explosion on the poor condition and prolonged neglect of the pipeline infrastructure. He urged the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) and relevant government agencies to immediately repair the damaged facility and provide emergency assistance to affected residents.
According to him, the destruction has displaced numerous households and disrupted livelihoods, with many families now facing possible food shortages due to the loss of their farmlands and agricultural produce.
Chief Eletuo also appealed to community youths to remain peaceful and avoid taking actions that could worsen the situation, expressing confidence that the government and appropriate intervention agencies would respond with relief materials and recovery support.

The incident has renewed calls for stricter monitoring, regular maintenance, and timely replacement of aging oil pipelines to prevent recurring environmental disasters in oil-producing communities across the Niger Delta region.
