Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was impeached as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, is reportedly set to return to his position.
Sources indicate that Obasa’s security details have been restored, while those of his successor, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, have been withdrawn.
Meranda, who previously served as Obasa’s deputy, was unanimously elected as Speaker following his impeachment, making history as the first female to hold the position in Lagos. However, despite not officially resigning, her tenure appears to be coming to an end following interventions by top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Over the weekend, a high-level meeting was convened by key APC figures, including former National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, ex-Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and lawmakers. During the meeting, a resolution was reportedly reached stating that Obasa’s removal was illegal and that the Assembly should reinstate him.
While it remains unclear when the House will reconvene to make the change official, signs indicate that Obasa’s return is imminent.
Nation’s curiosity reported that police operatives and security details assigned to Speaker Meranda and the Lagos State House of Assembly have been withdrawn with immediate effect. The Senior Special Assistant to Meranda on Media, Ganzallo Victor, has raised concerns over the development, warning that both the Speaker and the Assembly are now vulnerable.
The situation remains tense, with Meranda having adjourned plenary indefinitely two weeks ago following an invasion of the Assembly by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
