LPPC Suspends Mike Ozekhome’s SAN Rank Pending Disciplinary Proceedings

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has suspended the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) rank of renowned constitutional lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, pending the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings instituted against him.

The decision was reached during the committee’s 173rd General Meeting held on June 23, 2026, and was formally announced in a statement signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, Kabir Akanbi. The committee explained that the suspension was approved pursuant to Paragraph 26(6) of the Guidelines for the Conferment of the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and All Matters Pertaining to the Rank.

According to the LPPC, the suspension is a temporary measure that will remain in force until the disciplinary proceedings and other related matters before its Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee are fully determined.

The committee stated that the action was taken to preserve the integrity, dignity, and prestige of the prestigious Senior Advocate of Nigeria rank while due process is allowed to take its course.

As part of the directive, Chief Ozekhome has been instructed to refrain from presenting or holding himself out as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria throughout the duration of the suspension.

“Accordingly, Chief Mike Ozekhome shall refrain from parading himself, presenting himself, or otherwise holding himself out as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria pending the final determination of the disciplinary proceedings,” the LPPC said in its statement.

While the committee did not provide detailed particulars of the allegations in its official statement, it stressed that the disciplinary process is ongoing and that the suspension should not be interpreted as a final determination of guilt.

The LPPC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professional ethics, discipline, and integrity within Nigeria’s legal profession. It added that safeguarding public confidence in the SAN rank remains one of its core responsibilities.
