Beneficiaries of Obi Aguocha’s Scholarship Resume School at Federal College of Education Ofeme-Ohuhu

The first batch of beneficiaries of the scholarship programme initiated by Hon. Obi Aguocha, the lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, has officially resumed academic activities at the Federal College of Education (FCE), Ofeme-Ohuhu, Umuahia, Abia State.

The resumption marks another milestone in Aguocha’s commitment to expanding access to quality education and empowering young people through human capital development. The initiative is aimed at giving qualified but financially disadvantaged students the opportunity to pursue tertiary education without the burden of tuition costs.

The scholarship programme was first announced in April 2026 through the Obi Aguocha Frontliners platform. At the time, 20 students from across the federal constituency were selected for sponsorship into the newly established Federal College of Education, Ofeme-Ohuhu. Applicants were required to possess at least five credits in WAEC, NECO or NABTEB examinations and a minimum score of 100 in the 2025 UTME before being considered for admission.

The beneficiaries were admitted through the institution’s standard admission process and selected in accordance with the college’s academic requirements. They have now joined other students for the ongoing 2025/2026 academic session.

The students have the opportunity to study from a wide range of National Certificate in Education (NCE) programmes, including Social Studies, Political Science, Economics, Business Education, Computer Education, Agricultural Education and several other course combinations offered by the institution.

The Federal College of Education, Ofeme-Ohuhu, is one of Nigeria’s newest federal tertiary institutions. Approved during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the college officially commenced academic activities on June 24, 2025.

It admitted its pioneer students during the 2025 academic session and has continued to expand its facilities, including the construction of a 74-room female hostel, while benefiting from TETFund take-off grants to strengthen infrastructure and academic development.

Before launching the latest scholarship initiative, Hon. Obi Aguocha had already demonstrated a strong commitment to educational advancement within his constituency. He previously awarded scholarships to 317 students and announced plans to empower as many as 5,000 young people through education, skills acquisition and human capital development. According to the lawmaker, education remains a collective investment in building a more prosperous Abia State.

The latest scholarship beneficiaries were drawn from different communities across Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, reflecting an effort to provide equitable educational opportunities. However, some constituents have noted that allocating 20 scholarship slots across the constituency’s 32 electoral wards leaves many deserving applicants without support. They have therefore appealed for the programme to be expanded in future phases to accommodate more qualified students.

Supporters have described the scholarship scheme as a practical example of people-oriented representation, noting that it offers life-changing opportunities to students who might otherwise struggle to finance their education. Beneficiaries have also expressed gratitude for the opportunity, pledging to pursue academic excellence and contribute positively to their communities upon graduation.

Beyond supporting individual students, the programme contributes to strengthening the newly established Federal College of Education by increasing student enrolment while promoting access to affordable tertiary education. Combined with other scholarship efforts from notable individuals within the host community, the initiative has helped ease the institution’s early development and broaden educational opportunities for young people.

As the beneficiaries begin their academic journey, they are expected to complete the institution’s standard NCE curriculum under qualified lecturers in a conducive learning environment. Meanwhile, Hon. Obi Aguocha’s team has encouraged applicants who were not selected in the current phase to remain hopeful, indicating that additional scholarship opportunities may be made available in future admission exercises.
