BREAKING: UBA Announces Tony Elumelu’s Retirement, Appoints Emmanuel Nnorom as Group Chairman

United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has announced a major leadership transition, confirming that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, will retire from the Board of Directors on August 21, 2026, bringing to an end an era that significantly shaped the bank’s growth and transformation into one of Africa’s leading financial institutions.

In a statement released by the bank, UBA disclosed that Emmanuel Nnorom, a current Non-Executive Director on the Board, has been appointed as the incoming Group Chairman. His appointment will officially take effect on the same date Mr. Elumelu retires.

The transition forms part of the bank’s succession and corporate governance strategy, ensuring continuity in leadership while maintaining the institution’s long-term vision and stability.

Tony Elumelu, one of Africa’s most influential business leaders and investors, has played a pivotal role in UBA’s expansion across the African continent and into international markets. Under his leadership, the bank strengthened its presence in more than 20 African countries, as well as key financial centres including the United Kingdom, the United States, France and the United Arab Emirates.

Beyond UBA, Elumelu is widely recognized for championing entrepreneurship across Africa through the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which has empowered thousands of young entrepreneurs with funding, mentorship and business training.

His successor, Emmanuel Nnorom, is an accomplished corporate executive with extensive experience in banking, finance, insurance and corporate governance. Having served as a Non-Executive Director on UBA’s Board, he is expected to build on the bank’s strong governance framework while driving strategic growth in the years ahead.

Industry analysts believe the appointment reflects UBA’s commitment to a seamless leadership transition and sustained corporate performance.
