Senator Victor Umeh Calls for Tough Measures Against South Africa Over Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians
Senator Victor Umeh has called on the Nigerian government to take decisive action against South Africa over the recurring xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians and other foreign nationals.
Speaking on the issue, the senator expressed strong dissatisfaction with the continued violence against Nigerians living and doing business in South Africa. He argued that Nigeria should not hesitate to adopt firm diplomatic and economic measures if South African authorities fail to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians.
According to Umeh, Nigeria has the capacity to thrive without South African businesses operating within its borders. He maintained that the country’s economy would not collapse if such companies were compelled to leave.
“We can send them away from here, even their business, who cares? There is nothing they are doing in Nigeria that we cannot do for ourselves. It’s not like Nigeria will collapse if they go; we will never collapse,” the senator stated.
His comments come amid renewed public outrage over reports of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, with many Nigerians calling on the Federal Government to adopt a tougher stance in defending its citizens abroad.
The senator stressed that protecting Nigerians, regardless of where they reside, should remain a top national priority. He urged the government to explore all available diplomatic and economic options to ensure South African authorities take meaningful steps to prevent further attacks and hold perpetrators accountable.

Umeh’s remarks add to the growing calls from lawmakers and stakeholders demanding stronger action to address the persistent xenophobic violence and safeguard Nigeria’s national interests.
