Former Minister of Education and renowned public policy advocate, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, has strongly criticized the Nigerian Senate for its handling of allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The controversy began when Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan raised concerns about Akpabio’s conduct. However, the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions swiftly dismissed the allegations without a thorough investigation. She stressed that no individual or group should be allowed to manipulate public institutions for their benefit. “Our National Assembly belongs to the Nigerian people, not to politicians of any stripe or status,” Ezekwesili declared. She urged lawmakers to prioritize transparency and full disclosure, especially in sensitive matters involving high-ranking officials.
Ezekwesili also expressed disappointment in the Senate’s failure to uphold democratic principles. “Dismissing serious accusations without due process is irresponsible and unacceptable. It is a Democratic Aberration that cannot stand,” she asserted.
