Former Minister of Education and renowned public policy advocate, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, has strongly criticized the Nigerian Senate for its handling of allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In a statement shared on her official X (formerly Twitter) account, Ezekwesili described the Senate’s dismissal of the accusations as a “Democratic Aberration,” emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in public institutions.

The controversy began when Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan raised concerns about Akpabio’s conduct. However, the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions swiftly dismissed the allegations without a thorough investigation. Ezekwesili condemned this action, stating that the National Assembly is a public institution meant to serve the Nigerian people, not politicians seeking personal gain.

She stressed that no individual or group should be allowed to manipulate public institutions for their benefit. “Our National Assembly belongs to the Nigerian people, not to politicians of any stripe or status,” Ezekwesili declared. She urged lawmakers to prioritize transparency and full disclosure, especially in sensitive matters involving high-ranking officials.

Ezekwesili also expressed disappointment in the Senate’s failure to uphold democratic principles. “Dismissing serious accusations without due process is irresponsible and unacceptable. It is a Democratic Aberration that cannot stand,” she asserted.

Her remarks have sparked renewed calls for accountability in Nigeria’s legislative arm, with many citizens echoing her demand for a proper investigation into the allegations. As the debate continues, Ezekwesili’s stance serves as a reminder that public institutions must remain transparent and accountable to the people they serve.
