Alex Otti Orders Immediate Rehabilitation of Aguiyi-Ironsi’s Alma Mater, Preserves Historic Legacy in Abia

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has directed the immediate rehabilitation of Ibeama Primary School, Ndume Ibeku in Umuahia North Local Government Area, the alma mater of Nigeria’s first Military Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the late Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi.

The directive forms part of the state government’s ongoing programme to revamp public primary schools across Abia and preserve institutions of historical significance. The governor also ordered an assessment of the access road leading to the late Aguiyi-Ironsi’s family home, with a view to rehabilitating the road alongside the school.

Governor Otti gave the directive during a civic reception held at Ibeama Primary School in Ndume Ibeku, where community leaders appealed for government intervention to restore the aging school and improve infrastructure within the community.

Responding to the requests, the governor assured residents that his administration would not overlook the historic institution. He disclosed that Abia State is carrying out a comprehensive rehabilitation of public schools across the 17 local government areas and instructed the Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) to immediately begin the process of fast-tracking the school’s renovation.

Governor Otti also directed the Commissioner for Works to inspect the road leading to the residence of the late General Aguiyi-Ironsi and submit a report for possible reconstruction, stressing that the government remains committed to providing quality infrastructure that benefits communities across the state.

The governor thanked the people of Ndume Ibeku for their continued support and confidence in his administration, assuring them that his government would remain focused on delivering projects that improve education, road infrastructure and the overall welfare of Abians.

Community leaders, including the President-General of the Ndume Otuka Development Union, praised the governor for what they described as transformational leadership and people-oriented governance. They expressed appreciation for the administration’s developmental strides and pledged continued support for its programmes.
