The publication of presidential candidates’ educational credentials by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reignited public debate over the academic records submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.
Attention has focused on Tinubu’s INEC documents, which reportedly list no primary or secondary school qualifications while indicating a university degree from Chicago State University. The disclosure has prompted criticism from opposition figures and renewed discussions on transparency in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar questioned the records publicly, arguing that the omission of primary and secondary education details raises legitimate questions.
“Go to INEC record. Primary school: Nil, Secondary school: Nil, then university graduate. How?” Atiku asked.
The issue has become another point of contention in the growing political rivalry ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition voices insisting that candidates seeking the nation’s highest office should provide complete educational histories.
Reacting to the controversy, public policy analyst and public relations consultant Deyemi Saka dismissed the criticism, arguing that the focus should instead be on whether the President met constitutional requirements.
According to Saka, Tinubu’s Chicago State University certificate has already been subjected to scrutiny and has been found to be genuine. He maintained that the President fulfilled the legal qualifications required to contest elections and said the public should focus on more pressing governance issues rather than academic documentation.
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore also weighed in, criticizing Tinubu for allegedly omitting details of his primary and secondary education from the documents submitted to INEC.
Sowore claimed that the university certificate presented differs from the one submitted during the 1999 elections and sarcastically suggested that the President should consider enrolling in adult education to address the missing educational records.
The renewed controversy comes as political campaigns gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election. While critics argue that full disclosure strengthens public trust and accountability, Tinubu’s supporters insist that the President has already satisfied all constitutional eligibility requirements and that the debate is largely political.
