Wike claimed these threats arose from his commitment to speaking the truth, expressing gratitude for his survival amid intense opposition.
He recounted that in 2023, there were deliberate attempts on his life linked to his endorsement of Tinubu, emphasizing that his vocal stance provoked calls to “kill him.” Wike asserted that his predictions about the political landscape have proven accurate, validating the truth he championed despite the dangers. His support for Tinubu, a pivotal factor in the All Progressives Congress (APC) victory in Rivers State, drew significant backlash, particularly from within his own Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he clashed with Atiku Abubakar’s camp.
Wike also addressed malicious rumors circulated online, falsely claiming he collapsed and was flown abroad for treatment. He vehemently debunked these allegations, cursing those who spread the propaganda and affirming his robust health. The minister’s defiance underscores his resilience against both physical threats and media disinformation, which he believes were orchestrated to undermine his credibility.
His words: “Some of you, don’t put your face on the ground, raise your face up. Whether you are traditional ruler or a boys brigade, raise your face up. I am here, I am healthy, very very well. I woke up in the morning and you carry a dangerous story, that a man was flown out, that he collapsed, that the man has been flown out, you will be flown out very soon and I am going to write the condolence message to your family”.
This revelation aligns with Wike’s history of bold political maneuvers, including his leadership of the PDP’s G5 governors, who backed Tinubu over Atiku in 2023, a move that fueled intra-party tensions. Wike’s claims highlight the volatile nature of Nigerian politics, where allegiance shifts can provoke severe personal risks, yet he remains steadfast in his support for Tinubu’s administration
