Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has laid the foundation stone for the proposed Mater Spei Secondary, Technical and Vocational School in Onugba Ukoh, Olomaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Obi performed the foundation-laying ceremony on Sunday, August 16, 2026, during his visit to Kogi State, where he also inspected the Mater Spei Model Nursery and Primary School, an educational project supported by international donors.
The proposed school is designed to combine conventional secondary education with technical and vocational training, giving students in Onugba Ukoh and neighbouring communities access to academic knowledge alongside practical, career-oriented skills.
Speaking during the visit, Obi said the initiative would help young Nigerians develop the knowledge and competencies required to become self-reliant, productive and valuable contributors to their communities.
He commended the proprietor and management of Mater Spei for investing in education and described the project as an important contribution to human capital development. He also expressed his commitment to supporting the initiative.
Obi further stressed the importance of sustained investment in education, particularly in addressing the challenge of children who are unable to access formal schooling.
According to him, an estimated 20 million Nigerian children are currently out of school, making it necessary for governments, private organisations and other stakeholders to intensify efforts to expand access to quality education.
The former governor noted that education remains a fundamental driver of productivity, innovation and national development. He urged stakeholders to support initiatives that not only improve access to schooling but also equip young people with practical skills relevant to the modern economy.
The Mater Spei Secondary, Technical and Vocational School is expected to serve Onugba Ukoh and surrounding communities, providing students with a blend of secondary education and technical and vocational training aimed at improving employability, entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
The foundation-laying ceremony marks an important step toward expanding educational opportunities and practical skills development for young people in Kogi State.
