NDLEA Destroys ₦301bn Worth of Illicit Drugs in Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed a massive consignment of illicit drugs estimated at ₦301.058 billion in Lagos State, reaffirming Nigeria’s intensified efforts to tackle drug trafficking and its associated criminal activities.

The court-authorised destruction exercise was conducted on Monday, August 17, 2026, after the conclusion of relevant legal proceedings and the forfeiture of abandoned drug consignments. The operation took place in Lagos.

According to the NDLEA, a total of 329,865.585 kilogrammes of assorted narcotic substances were destroyed during the exercise. The seized substances comprised cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, cannabis varieties including Canadian Loud and skunk, as well as ephedrine, tramadol, codeine-based syrup, other opioids and khat leaves.

Of the total quantity destroyed, 246,864.535 kilogrammes were recovered by the NDLEA Lagos Strategic Command between April 2025 and May 2026.

NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), said the destruction represented more than the disposal of seized narcotics, describing it as a clear demonstration of the Federal Government’s resolve to weaken drug trafficking networks and prevent criminal organisations from benefiting from the illicit trade.

Marwa stressed the importance of sustained collaboration among law enforcement and other relevant institutions in confronting the growing threat posed by illegal drugs.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other security stakeholders also commended the NDLEA for its sustained operations against drug trafficking. They noted that the illegal drug trade remains closely connected to organised crime and other security challenges affecting communities.
