The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified enforcement of Nigeria’s ban on alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small PET bottles below 200ml, directing manufacturers and distributors to recall and destroy remaining products.
The nationwide enforcement follows the expiration of the transition period for affected alcoholic drinks, with the ban taking full effect on January 1, 2026. NAFDAC says businesses still producing, distributing or selling the prohibited products risk serious regulatory sanctions.
According to the agency, manufacturers with remaining stocks are expected to retrieve the affected products and destroy them under NAFDAC’s supervision. Enforcement teams are also conducting market inspections and mop-up operations at outlets, motor parks and other locations where the banned alcoholic beverages may still be available.
NAFDAC’s action is aimed at protecting public health, particularly children and young people. The agency has expressed concern that the small and relatively inexpensive packaging of some alcoholic drinks makes them more accessible to underage consumers.
Findings cited by officials indicate that a significant proportion of minors who consume alcohol obtain it through sachet and other small-sized alcoholic products. NAFDAC maintains that restricting the availability of these products is part of broader efforts to reduce underage drinking and limit easy access to alcohol.
The agency has also warned manufacturers, distributors, retailers and other businesses against violating the ban. Those found dealing in the prohibited products could face heavy financial penalties, closure of business premises and other regulatory measures, depending on the nature and severity of the violation.
NAFDAC’s renewed enforcement has generated mixed reactions. While some Nigerians have welcomed the move as an important step towards protecting young people from alcohol-related harm, others have questioned how the products were previously approved and the effectiveness of enforcement, particularly in rural communities and informal markets.
The agency’s nationwide operation is therefore expected to place greater pressure on manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers to comply with the regulations and remove banned alcoholic products from circulation.
NAFDAC has urged businesses and members of the public to cooperate with enforcement authorities and ensure that prohibited sachet alcohol and alcoholic beverages packaged in PET bottles below 200ml are not produced, stocked or sold.
