Nigeria is on the lookout for a stronger defense partnership with the Czech Republic, aiming to boost its ability to produce military equipment and enhance the capabilities of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).
Leading a Nigerian delegation, Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammed Matawalle, embarked on a three-day official visit to the Czech Republic. The discussions during this trip revolved around defense production, technology transfer, and ways to bolster Nigeria’s homegrown military manufacturing skills.
While in the Czech Republic, Matawalle and his team participated in the Czech Air Force Day, Air Show, and Defence Exhibition in Ostrava. This event allowed the Nigerian delegation to get a firsthand look at the cutting-edge military equipment and technologies developed by the Czech defense sector.
A key highlight of the visit was Matawalle’s meeting with Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Jaromír Zuna (Rtd.). Their talks focused on fortifying the strategic ties between Nigeria and the Czech Republic, particularly in enhancing DICON’s ability to produce military hardware domestically.
Matawalle specifically requested Czech assistance in setting up an ammunition production line in Nigeria, aiming for a partnership that would involve DICON and relevant stakeholders from the Czech defense industry.
The discussions also touched on the transfer of defense technologies to Nigeria, especially in the realm of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other military equipment. This proposed collaboration is designed to provide Nigeria with better access to technical know-how and industrial capabilities, ultimately supporting the growth of its domestic defense manufacturing sector.
