The Abia State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement operation targeting vehicles with defaced, covered or improperly displayed registration number plates, as well as motorists using tinted glasses without valid permits.
The enforcement exercise began on Monday, September 21, 2026, as part of measures to strengthen compliance with vehicle regulations, improve road safety and support the maintenance of law and order across the state.
The operation is being carried out in accordance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police and the instructions of the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, psc(+), mnips, JP.
The exercise is being coordinated by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Ifeanyi Ohuruzo, with personnel drawn from the Area Command, Umuahia, the State Traffic Department and the Central Police Station.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, officers involved in the operation were properly briefed before deployment. They were directed to maintain professionalism, exercise restraint and comply strictly with established operational procedures and ethical standards.
The Police Command has urged motorists across Abia State to ensure that their vehicles comply with applicable regulations. This includes displaying registration number plates clearly and correctly and obtaining the appropriate permit where tinted glass is installed on a vehicle.
The Command also appealed to members of the public to cooperate with police officers during the enforcement exercise, stressing the importance of compliance in promoting public safety and effective law enforcement.
The enforcement is currently ongoing in Aba and other parts of the state through various Area Commands as the police intensify efforts to improve security and ensure compliance with traffic and vehicle regulations.
The Abia Police Command has also provided channels for members of the public to report alleged misconduct or unprofessional behaviour by officers during the exercise. Complaints can be made through the Complaint Response Unit on 09031593827 or 09035401645.
