The Abia State Police Command has recorded a significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to tackle criminal activities, following the recovery of a locally fabricated single-barrel gun, a 50kg bag containing substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa, and three motorcycles believed to have been stolen.
The recoveries followed separate operations carried out by police operatives based on intelligence gathered within the state.
According to a statement released on Thursday, September 24, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, operatives attached to the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit raided a suspected criminal hideout at Onitsha Ngwa in Obingwa Local Government Area on September 23.
The operation was reportedly carried out following actionable intelligence and in accordance with directives from the Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi.
During the raid, the suspected criminals and their accomplices reportedly fled the location before the arrival of the operatives. However, the police recovered a locally made single-barrel firearm and a 50kg bag containing substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa from the scene.
In a related development, police operatives on September 24 arrested a 20-year-old suspect identified as Ebuka Nwakerindu, a native of Umuokoromiri Village in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
Three motorcycles allegedly stolen and subsequently recovered from the suspect were also taken into police custody as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Abia State Police Command said efforts were continuing to locate and arrest other suspects who escaped during the operations.
The Command further stated that the arrested suspect would be charged before a court after the completion of investigations and other necessary legal procedures.
Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to public safety, CP Wilfred Afolabi said the police would continue to strengthen intelligence-led operations and proactive crime-prevention measures aimed at protecting lives and property across Abia State.
