VIDEO: Ex-INEC Commissioner Raises Alarm Over Alleged NYSC Impostors Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Commissioner Mike Igini has warned that attempts to manipulate the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) personnel lists could threaten the credibility of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Igini raised the concern during an appearance on Arise TV, where he discussed alleged methods politicians could use to compromise the electoral process, particularly through the recruitment and deployment of polling officials.

According to the former electoral commissioner, political actors could exploit weaknesses in the NYSC verification system by introducing fictitious identities into official records and providing impostors with NYSC uniforms to make them appear to be legitimate election workers.

He cautioned that such practices, if allowed to occur, could undermine the integrity of the voting process and create opportunities for electoral malpractice during the forthcoming elections.

Igini Calls for Stronger Verification of Election Officials

Igini stressed the importance of strengthening the verification of personnel assigned to election duties, urging relevant authorities to adopt more reliable systems for identifying and confirming the identities of prospective ad hoc staff.

He advocated the digitisation of records and stricter verification procedures to prevent unauthorised individuals from gaining access to polling stations under the guise of serving as NYSC members.

The warning comes as INEC prepares for the 2027 general elections, for which the commission is expected to deploy more than 1.4 million ad hoc personnel, predominantly NYSC members, across 176,846 polling units nationwide.

Given the scale of the proposed deployment, Igini’s concerns highlight the need for effective coordination between INEC and the NYSC to ensure that only duly verified personnel are assigned electoral responsibilities.

A credible verification system, he suggested, would help reduce the risk of impersonation and strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.

Voters Have a Critical Role in Protecting the Ballot

Beyond the responsibility of electoral authorities, Igini urged Nigerians to recognise their role in safeguarding elections at the polling-unit level.

He observed that voters typically outnumber the small team of officials responsible for administering voting at individual polling units, creating an opportunity for citizens to remain alert and monitor proceedings.

He encouraged voters to pay attention to the conduct of election officials, question suspicious activities through lawful channels and report any suspected irregularities to the appropriate authorities.

However, the responsibility for preventing electoral fraud must not rest on voters alone. INEC and other relevant institutions must establish effective safeguards to ensure that every person authorised to handle election materials or perform polling duties has been properly identified and accredited.

2027 Elections and the Need to Protect Electoral Credibility

The warning adds to ongoing concerns about the security, transparency and credibility of Nigeria’s next general elections, scheduled for January and February 2027, according to the information provided.

With millions of voters expected to participate across the country, the integrity of election personnel will remain an important part of the preparations.

Any attempt to introduce unverified individuals into the electoral workforce could damage public trust and cast doubt on the administration of the polls. For this reason, transparent recruitment procedures, reliable digital records and effective identity checks will be essential.

Igini’s intervention serves as a reminder that protecting Nigeria’s electoral process requires cooperation among INEC, the NYSC, security agencies, political parties and the electorate.

As preparations continue, Nigerians will be watching closely to see what measures are introduced to prevent impersonation and ensure that the 2027 elections reflect the genuine choices of voters.
