A member of the House of Representatives, Obi Aguocha, has disclosed that his outspoken support for Nnamdi Kanu is costing him politically and personally.
Representing the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Aguocha said his persistent calls for Kanu’s release and his firm stance on constitutional matters have led to setbacks and negative perceptions in certain circles. Despite the challenges, the lawmaker emphasized that he remains resolute and has no regrets.
According to him, his advocacy has resulted in being labelled and sidelined by some political actors. However, he insisted that his actions are rooted in conviction and a strong commitment to justice and fairness.
Aguocha further revealed that he has been entrusted by Kanu with the responsibility to negotiate for his release, describing the move as a sign of confidence in his efforts. He noted that the mandate reinforces the trust the detained leader has placed in him.
The lawmaker also criticized some South-East leaders for allegedly avoiding open discussions about Kanu’s detention and other pressing issues affecting the Igbo community. He urged regional leaders to demonstrate courage and unity in addressing these concerns.
Drawing comparisons, Aguocha called on Igbo leaders to adopt a more coordinated approach similar to that used by Yoruba leaders in securing the release of Sunday Igboho. He stressed that collective action remains key to achieving progress.
He commended Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for efforts to rally South-East governors towards advocating for Kanu’s freedom, describing it as a step in the right direction.
