Calls for Kanu’s Release Intensify: A Political Solution in Sight?
Abuja, Nigeria – The push for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has gained renewed momentum, with a key figure, Honorable Obi Aguocha, a member of the House of Representatives, playing a pivotal role in the ongoing negotiations and advocacy.
Honorable Aguocha, who represents Kanu’s federal constituency, has taken a personal and official interest in the matter, viewing it as his responsibility to advocate for Kanu’s freedom and address what he describes as injustices within Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
Key Developments and Aguocha’s Efforts:
Successful Visitation: A significant breakthrough was achieved in September when Aguocha facilitated the first successful visitation between Nnamdi Kanu and his legal team. This was a crucial step, given previous difficulties in accessing the separatist leader.
Engagement with Authorities: Aguocha has detailed extensive efforts, including formal communications with the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) and a tripartite meeting involving the Speaker of the House and the Director-General of the SSS. He commended the current DG SSS for a more cordial and respectful approach, even allowing Kanu to choose his own medical care.
Legal Arguments: A central plank of the argument for Kanu’s release is the invocation of Section 174 of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers the Attorney General to withdraw cases before court determination. Furthermore, the Supreme Court’s stance that Kanu’s bail should not have been revoked, considering the circumstances of his prior escape, has also been highlighted.
Illegal Rendition: Kanu currently faces seven counts of terrorism and belonging to a proscribed organization, charges he denies. Renunciation of Violence and Optimism:
Aguocha also affirmed that Nnamdi Kanu has renounced violence, the disruptive “Monday sit-at-homes,” and the escalating crime rates in the Southeast.
Despite frustrations over the state’s historical disregard for court orders regarding Kanu’s detention, Aguocha remains optimistic about his imminent release. This optimism is fueled by assurances from the Governor of Abia State and increased engagement from the government.
