Ebonyi businessman Emmanuel Eze has turned down Governor Francis Nwifuru’s appointment to the state’s Economic Advisory Committee, citing timing concerns. The state government quickly fired back, insisting the decision does not weaken its economic vision.

The Ebonyi State government has broken its silence after businessman and politician Emmanuel Eze rejected his recent appointment to the state’s Economic Advisory Committee. The development has sparked conversations in political and business circles, with both Eze and the government offering contrasting perspectives on the timing and relevance of the committee.

Governor Francis Nwifuru had announced the constitution of the Economic Advisory Committee as part of his administration’s strategy to drive growth and development in Ebonyi. Among the appointees was Eze, Chief Executive Officer of Immaculate Group of Companies and former House of Representatives candidate for Abakaliki/Izzi Federal Constituency.

On August 29, 2025, a formal letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Grace Umezuruike, conveyed the appointment to Eze. But in a surprising twist, the businessman declined the offer—an action that has since drawn attention.

Why Emmanuel Eze Said “No”

Eze explained that while he remains committed to the progress of Ebonyi, he believed the timing of the committee’s inauguration was misplaced. According to him, economic advisory teams are usually most impactful when set up at the beginning of a new administration, giving them enough time to shape policies and monitor implementation.

He stated that joining the committee at this stage would not align with his vision of how best to contribute. Instead, he affirmed his preference to continue serving the state’s interest through his private endeavors and other developmental initiatives.

Ebonyi Government Fires Back

The Ebonyi government, however, strongly disagreed with Eze’s reasoning. In a statement issued by the Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Leo Oketa, the administration described his timing argument as “misguided.”

Oketa stressed that economic reform is not bound by electoral calendars but rather a continuous process. He explained that Governor Nwifuru deliberately waited to stabilize key governance areas and address urgent public needs before unveiling the Economic Advisory Committee.

“This was not a rushed decision,” Oketa said. “It is a strategic move designed for long-term sustainability. The idea that economic planning must only begin at the start of a government is misleading. Growth and reform require timing, precision, and strategy.”

“No One Is Indispensable”

Reacting further, the governor’s aide insisted that Eze’s refusal does not diminish the credibility of the committee. He highlighted that the advisory body is composed of respected professionals with proven records both in Nigeria and abroad.

“No one is indispensable,” Oketa emphasized. “The Governor has assembled a credible, competent, and diverse team. The refusal of one person does not invalidate the strength of the group or elevate him above those who accepted to serve. The vision of Ebonyi’s economic future is far bigger than any individual.”

A Test of Leadership and Vision

The incident has sparked mixed reactions among Ebonyi residents. Some argue that Eze’s decision reflects independence and principle, while others believe the businessman missed an opportunity to influence policies at a crucial time.

Analysts suggest that the situation highlights the challenges of governance in balancing timing, inclusion, and perception. For Governor Nwifuru, the episode may serve as both a test of leadership and a chance to prove that his economic agenda can thrive despite dissenting voices.

What Lies Ahead for Ebonyi’s Economy?

Regardless of the controversy, the Economic Advisory Committee is expected to play a central role in shaping policies that attract investments, improve infrastructure, and boost industries in Ebonyi State.

Observers note that Ebonyi is positioning itself as an emerging hub of economic opportunities in Nigeria’s Southeast, and the success of this committee could significantly influence the state’s trajectory.

For now, one thing is clear: Emmanuel Eze’s rejection has stirred attention, but the Ebonyi government is determined to move forward with its plans—firm in its stance that the state’s economic vision is greater than any single individual.
