The vibrant people of Ohuhu in Umuahia North, Abia State, turned out in grand style today, September 4, 2025, for their much-awaited Iwa Ji Ohuhu (New Yam Festival). The celebration, filled with culture, unity, and tradition, took place at Afugiri Primary School, opposite Afugiri police station, kicking off at exactly 12 noon.
Hosted by the Ohuhu Traditional Rulers Council in partnership with the Ohuhu Welfare Union Worldwide, the festival once again proved to be more than just a thanksgiving for harvest—it was a powerful reminder of the community’s rich heritage and unity.

Dignitaries Storm the Event
The occasion attracted some of the most prominent sons and daughters of Ohuhu, including:
Hon. High Chief Sir Obinna Aguocha (MHR)
Hon. Chief Smart Iheoma
Hon. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro
Hon. Aham Uko
Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu (Ably represented)

They were joined by other respected figures and dignitaries from outside the community, underscoring the growing recognition of the festival.
Royal Fathers, Youth, and Women Unite
The presence of the Ohuhu council of traditional rulers, the women’s wing, and the youth wing of the Ohuhu Welfare Union gave the festival a majestic and all-inclusive outlook. Cultural dances, music, and traditional displays created a festive atmosphere that united all generations of Ohuhu people.
As community leaders remarked, the age-old saying rang true: “A man who fails to respect and honour the culture and traditions of the land is prone to make mistakes.”
