Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has delivered a dramatic one-week ultimatum to activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, following his controversial social media post about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The security agency warned that Sowore must retract or clarify his statement within the set timeframe. Failure to comply, according to the DSS, will leave the agency with no choice but to “explore all lawful means” to safeguard national security and public order.

The move has ignited widespread debate across political and civic spaces, with critics questioning whether the government is clamping down on free speech or acting in the interest of stability.

Sowore, a fierce critic of past and present administrations, has not issued an official response to the ultimatum. Political watchers believe his reaction—or refusal to react—could escalate the standoff.

The DSS reiterated that while Nigerians have the constitutional right to express opinions, those freedoms must not be used to threaten peace or incite unrest.
