Canada has rejected 1,596 asylum claims from Nigerians in 2025, signaling a tougher stance on refugee applications, new IRB data shows.

Canada has turned down 1,596 asylum claims filed by Nigerians so far in 2025, according to new figures released by the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB). The sharp rise in rejections signals a tougher stance on refugee applications from Nigeria, one of Canada’s top source countries for asylum seekers.

The IRB data shows that while Canada continues to receive high numbers of Nigerian asylum requests, the rate of refusals has increased notably compared to previous years. Analysts point to stricter screening measures, evolving eligibility rules, and concerns about incomplete documentation as possible reasons for the surge in denials.
