National Assembly Clerk affirms only the Senate can decide Senator Natasha’s fate, citing constitutional powers and legislative independence.

The Clerk of the National Assembly has clarified that only the Nigerian Senate has the constitutional authority to determine the political future of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. This statement follows growing speculation and debates surrounding recent legal and political developments involving the Kogi Central lawmaker.

Speaking in Abuja, the Clerk emphasized that the Senate, as an independent arm of government, retains the exclusive power to decide matters concerning its members. He explained that the National Assembly operates under constitutional provisions that guarantee legislative autonomy and ensure due process when issues of membership, suspension, or disqualification arise.

Political observers note that the Clerk’s statement is aimed at dispelling misinformation and reaffirming the principle of separation of powers. According to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the Senate has the right to regulate its internal affairs and take decisions on disciplinary or eligibility matters affecting senators.

This clarification comes amid heightened public interest in Senator Natasha’s position, underscoring the importance of legislative independence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
