VIDEO: Retired Nigerian Police Officers Protest at Aso Rock Over Pension Concerns

Retired Nigerian police officers protest at Aso Rock, demanding pension reforms and immediate approval of the Police Service Pension Board Bill 2025.

Tensions rose in Nigeria’s capital as retired police officers staged a protest at the gates of Aso Rock, demanding urgent reforms to their pension system.

The demonstration, led by the Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria, disrupted access to the presidential complex and drew national attention to the grievances of former law enforcement personnel.

The protesters called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately assent to the proposed Police Service Pension Board Bill 2025. According to the group, the legislation would remove police retirees from the current Contributory Pension Scheme and align their benefits with those of the military and other security agencies.

Voicing strong dissatisfaction, the retirees described the existing pension framework as unfair and inadequate. They argued that despite years of service under challenging conditions, many officers now face financial hardship due to delayed payments and minimal pension benefits. The situation, they say, is worsened by rising living costs across the country.

During the protest, emotions ran high as some retirees shared personal experiences of hardship.

One demonstrator expressed frustration over the disparity between active service sacrifices and retirement realities, noting that many former officers struggle to meet basic needs while awaiting pension disbursements.

The protest briefly blocked access to the presidential gate, highlighting the urgency of their demands. However, there was no immediate official response from government authorities at the time of the demonstration.

The development has reignited discussions around pension reforms in Nigeria, particularly for security personnel who have served the nation for decades.

Stakeholders continue to call for swift action to address the concerns raised and ensure a more equitable system for retired officers.
