DSS sues X and Meta over Omoyele Sowore’s posts accusing President Tinubu of corruption during his Brazil visit.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a five-count legal action at the Federal High Court in Abuja targeting major social media platforms X (formerly Twitter) and Meta (owner of Facebook). The charges stem from posts allegedly made by Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore on August 25 and 26, 2025.
According to court documents, Sowore allegedly used his verified X account and Facebook page to describe President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a “criminal” and accused him of corruption and dishonesty during his official visit to Brazil. The DSS claims the posts breached national security protocols and violated Nigerian cyber and defamation laws.

Legal analysts say the case marks one of the most high-profile attempts by a Nigerian security agency to hold social media platforms accountable for user-generated content. If upheld, it could redefine the responsibility of tech companies in moderating posts from high-profile users within Nigeria.
The Federal High Court is expected to begin hearings on the case soon. Both X and Meta have yet to issue public statements regarding the lawsuit.
