Court orders IGP to arrest INEC Chairman Mahmoud Yakubu over contempt for disobeying ruling on Action Alliance leadership dispute.

The Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, has directed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, for contempt of court and disobedience of judicial orders.

Justice Funmilola Demi-Ajayi, presiding over the matter, criticized INEC’s disregard for the court’s decision. The court imposed a fine of ₦100,000 against Prof. Yakubu and ordered him to restore the names of the affected chairmen on the INEC portal within seven days.

The judge further ruled that if the electoral body fails to comply within the given timeframe, the IGP must proceed with the arrest of the INEC chairman.

The court emphasized that the national convention which produced Omoaje as the National Chairman of Action Alliance was valid, having been conducted in accordance with the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, and duly monitored by INEC officials.

This decision underscores growing concerns about compliance with judicial rulings by institutions of governance and highlights the ongoing legal battle between INEC and the Action Alliance over party leadership recognition.
