FG declares Mathematics no longer compulsory for Arts students seeking university or polytechnic admission.

Federal Ministry of Education has announced that Mathematics will no longer be a compulsory subject for Arts students seeking admission into Nigerian universities and polytechnics.

According to the Ministry, the new directive aims to promote inclusiveness and align admission requirements with the specific needs of different academic disciplines. This means that students pursuing courses in the Arts and Humanities will now be evaluated based on subjects directly relevant to their chosen fields, rather than the traditional general requirements.

Education experts have lauded the move, describing it as a long-overdue reform that could reduce barriers to higher education for many students who excel in creative and literary disciplines but struggle with Mathematics.

The Ministry further stated that the policy will take immediate effect and urged tertiary institutions across the country to adjust their admission criteria accordingly.

This development marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s education system, as it seeks to create a more flexible and equitable framework that reflects students’ diverse academic strengths.
