The House of Representatives has taken another significant step toward improving healthcare delivery in Abia State as the Bill to Establish the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ikwuano, successfully scaled through the Committee of the Whole and advanced to the Third Reading.
Sponsored by Hon. Obi Aguocha, who represents Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, the proposed legislation seeks to establish a fully equipped federal medical facility that will serve as a major healthcare and research hub in the South-East region.

During the plenary session, lawmakers commended the bill’s intent, emphasizing that establishing a Federal Medical Centre in Ikwuano would bridge the healthcare gap, create employment opportunities, and ease the pressure on existing medical facilities in neighboring areas.
The bill’s progress marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s healthcare reform efforts, aligning with the federal government’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare services across the country.
Once passed into law, the Federal Medical Centre, Ikwuano, will not only provide advanced medical services but also foster medical education and professional training for healthcare workers in Abia and beyond.
With the bill now approaching the final legislative stage, stakeholders and constituents have expressed optimism that its passage will bring lasting development and healthcare transformation to Ikwuano and surrounding communities.
