In a significant development at the National Assembly, the Nigerian Senate has stepped down the second reading of the bill seeking to amend the 2022 Electoral Act. The decision was made during Thursday’s plenary session to allow for broader consultations among key stakeholders before the bill proceeds further.

The proposed amendment aims to address certain challenges identified during the 2023 general elections and improve the overall electoral process in Nigeria. However, lawmakers agreed that more dialogue with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political parties, and civil society organizations is necessary to ensure the bill reflects national consensus.

Senate leaders emphasized that the postponement is not a rejection of the amendment but a step toward refining the legislation for greater transparency, inclusiveness, and credibility in future elections.

Further deliberations are expected after the Senate concludes its consultations and receives inputs from relevant stakeholders.
