Police caution protest groups to obey Abuja court order restricting protests near key national institutions to maintain peace and order.
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reiterated its steadfast commitment to upholding the rule of law, maintaining peace, and protecting public order in line with constitutional mandates.
This reaffirmation follows a subsisting order of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, delivered on October 17, 2025, by Justice M.G. Umar in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2202/2025 FRN v. Omoyele Sowore & 4 Others. The court’s ruling explicitly restrains the respondents and their associates from organizing or participating in any form of protest within and around key national institutions such as Aso Rock Villa, the National Assembly, Force Headquarters, Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way.

In an official statement, the Police urged all concerned groups both those advocating for and against the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to adhere strictly to the court order. The Force emphasized that while the right to peaceful assembly is constitutionally guaranteed, it must be exercised responsibly, without infringing on the safety, rights, or security of others.
The statement cautioned both protesters and counter-protesters to avoid restricted zones and refrain from any acts capable of inciting violence or disrupting public peace. It warned that anyone found exploiting protests to commit criminal acts such as vandalism, assault, or carrying weapons would face the full weight of the law. The Police also disclosed that digital evidence from social media will be used to identify and prosecute offenders.
Furthermore, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has instructed the FCT Commissioner of Police and other relevant commands to enforce the court’s directive through strategic deployments, ensuring the safety of residents and smooth functioning of lawful activities within the Federal Capital Territory.
The Nigeria Police Force reassured citizens of adequate security arrangements and encouraged them to continue their normal routines without fear. However, it warned that any individual or group defying the court order will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with existing laws.
