The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a four-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to resolve the lingering issues between the government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

In a statement released on Monday, the NLC expressed concern over the continuous disruption of academic activities in Nigerian universities, emphasizing that the ongoing crisis poses a grave threat to the future of education in the country.

According to the Congress, the persistent disagreements between ASUU and the Federal Government have led to repeated strikes, causing significant setbacks in the nation’s tertiary education system. The NLC urged the government to take immediate steps to meet ASUU’s demands and ensure that university lecturers return to the classrooms without further delay.

The labour body warned that failure to resolve the crisis within the stipulated four weeks may compel it to take decisive industrial action in solidarity with the lecturers.

“The education sector cannot continue to suffer neglect while students remain at home indefinitely. We urge the Federal Government to act swiftly and responsibly to prevent another total shutdown,” the NLC stated.

As the deadline draws closer, stakeholders across the education and labour sectors are watching closely to see if the government will act decisively to avert another nationwide disruption.
