Chibuike Azubuike, the self-proclaimed Obi of Lagos, apologizes to the state government and Oba of Lagos after his fraud-related arrest.

The self-acclaimed “Obi of Lagos”, Chibuike Azubuike, who was arrested by police operatives in Lagos in September over an alleged fraud scheme, has publicly apologised to the Lagos State Government and the Oba of Lagos.

Azubuike, who reportedly assumed the traditional title without official recognition, was taken into custody after being linked to a fraudulent activity that drew widespread public attention. Following his release, he issued a statement expressing deep remorse for his actions and for any embarrassment caused to the Lagos royal institution.

In his apology, Azubuike admitted that his conduct was “misguided and regrettable,” adding that he had learned valuable lessons from the incident. He further appealed for forgiveness from the state authorities and the revered monarch, pledging to turn a new leaf.

The Lagos State Police Command had earlier cautioned members of the public to be wary of individuals parading themselves under false titles or using such claims to deceive unsuspecting citizens. Authorities reiterated their commitment to upholding law and order while protecting the integrity of traditional institutions in the state.

The Oba of Lagos has yet to issue an official response, but sources close to the palace described the apology as a “welcome step toward reconciliation,” emphasizing that respect for traditional authority remains a cornerstone of Lagos’ cultural identity.

Azubuike’s case has sparked conversations about the abuse of traditional titles and the need for stronger legal frameworks to curb impersonation and fraudulent claims across Nigeria.
