Human rights advocate and Executive Director of Enough Is Enough Nigeria (EiE), Yemi Adamolekun, was reportedly stopped and assaulted by security operatives at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos on Sunday, while attempting to lay flowers in memory of victims of the October 20, 2020 EndSARS protest.

The incident, captured in a video now circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), shows the activist being restrained by uniformed officers who prevented her from placing flowers at the symbolic site of the 2020 shooting of peaceful protesters.

Eyewitnesses said Adamolekun arrived at the toll gate as part of the annual memorial procession organized to honor those who lost their lives during the EndSARS demonstrations. However, her peaceful gesture was interrupted by security operatives who reportedly manhandled her and ordered her to leave the area.

The video, shared by @NigeriaStories, sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians condemning what they described as “a show of force” against peaceful remembrance. Social media users also questioned why security agents continue to obstruct citizens from holding quiet memorials for the fallen protesters.

The Lekki Toll Gate has remained a powerful symbol of the EndSARS movement a nationwide youth-led protest against police brutality and the abuses of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). On October 20, 2020, soldiers reportedly opened fire on protesters at the site, an event that drew global attention and condemnation.

While the Nigerian government has repeatedly denied ordering the shootings, several panels of inquiry and rights organizations have documented evidence of deaths and injuries from the incident.

As of press time, neither the Lagos State Police Command nor the state government had issued an official statement regarding the altercation involving Yemi Adamolekun.

Observers say the incident highlights continuing tensions between citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and the actions of state security agencies during memorials of the EndSARS protest.
