The Governor described WAEC’s choice of Abia as both an honor and a recognition of the state’s renewed commitment to educational development under his administration.
“We thank WAEC for choosing Abia. We have received your letter and have already begun making arrangements. I assure you that Abia is fully prepared to host a successful and memorable event,” Governor Otti stated.
He added that WAEC’s decision to bring the high-level policy meeting to Abia aligns with his government’s ongoing educational reforms and investment in human capital development.
“This choice reflects our strong education-friendly policies. Since assuming office in 2023, we declared an emergency on education, health, infrastructure, and security to reposition Abia for excellence. We have renovated schools, improved teacher training, and strengthened our curriculum,” he noted.
In furtherance of his education agenda, Governor Otti directed the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, to reopen the recruitment portal for an additional 5,000 qualified teachers to strengthen the state’s workforce.
Earlier, Mrs. Mary Chima, WAEC’s Branch Controller, announced that the 2025 WAEC Nigeria National Committee Meeting will be held in Umuahia from November 17 to 21, 2025.
According to her, the decision to host the meeting in Abia is a recognition of Governor Otti’s exceptional commitment to educational excellence, discipline, and reform.
“Under your leadership, Abia has maintained one of the highest records of performance in WAEC examinations nationwide and demonstrated strong cooperation with the Council. The choice of Abia is a well-deserved acknowledgment of your administration’s dedication to academic integrity and growth,” Mrs. Chima said.
She further explained that the National Council Meeting is WAEC’s highest policy-making body in Nigeria, bringing together State Commissioners of Education, Heads of WAEC Offices, and Senior National Officers to review policies and set new directions for education and examination standards across the country.
Present at the meeting were the Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, and other top government officials.
