Speed Darlington blasts Tinubu’s new tax law, calling the 25% income tax unfair to average Nigerians amid inflation and economic hardship.

Nigerian entertainer and rapper, Speed Darlington, has sparked widespread debate after releasing a viral video on October 25, 2025, criticizing the newly signed Nigeria Tax Act by President Bola Tinubu.

In the video, Speed Darlington expressed outrage over what he believed to be a 25% income tax rate imposed on Nigerians earning around ₦3 million annually, arguing that such a levy would worsen the economic hardship already facing citizens amid rising inflation and erratic power supply.

“I just bought a solar panel worth over ₦1 million. Assuming they have started collecting the 25% income tax, how will I be able to afford it again? Imagine collecting 25% from someone earning ₦3 million annually how much will the person now be getting?” Speed Darlington laments in the viral video.

However, government sources and financial analysts have clarified that the new law introduces a progressive tax system rather than a flat 25% rate. The system, set to take effect from January 1, 2026, will impose tax rates ranging from 0% for incomes up to ₦800,000 to 25% for those earning above ₦50 million annually.

According to the Tinubu administration, the new policy aims to broaden Nigeria’s tax base, reduce dependence on oil revenue, and fund key infrastructure and social programs.

Despite these clarifications, many Nigerians have echoed Speed Darlington’s frustrations, arguing that the timing of the reform is insensitive given the rising cost of living. Online reactions remain divided while some citizens sympathize with the entertainer’s plight, others fault him for misunderstanding the tiered nature of the tax structure.
