A heated confrontation erupted at the National Assembly on Wednesday as officials from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) stormed out of a House of Representatives Committee hearing after their request to exclude journalists from the session was rejected.
The House Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies had summoned JAMB to appear for a review of its 2023–2024 budget performance, internally generated revenue (IGR), and remittances to the Consolidated Revenue Fund. The committee also sought access to the board’s bank statements and financial documents.
Instead of the Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB sent its Director of Finance and Administration, Mufutau Bello, to represent the agency. However, tensions flared when Bello reportedly insisted that journalists be excused from the meeting before any document could be presented. Lawmakers firmly rejected the request, insisting on transparency and the public’s right to know.
Following a heated exchange, the JAMB delegation abruptly left the session, prompting outrage from committee members. The lawmakers condemned the walkout as a “disrespectful act” against the National Assembly and immediately ordered that the officials be arrested for contempt.
The committee further issued a summons compelling Prof. Oloyede to appear in person on or before November 4, bringing along all necessary financial records. Members warned that failure to comply could attract constitutional sanctions in line with legislative powers of oversight.
Observers say the incident underscores the growing tension between government agencies and the National Assembly over accountability and transparency in public fund management.
