Court warns Nnamdi Kanu to defend his case by Nov 5 or lose his right to defence in ongoing terrorism trial.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a strong warning to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), over his continued refusal to open his defence in his ongoing terrorism trial.
Presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, cautioned that the court would foreclose Kanu’s right to defend himself if he fails to appear and open his defence on the next adjourned date, November 5, 2025.
This warning follows the fourth consecutive court session in which Kanu declined to proceed with his defence, despite repeated directions from the court. The judge noted that the IPOB leader’s continued absence and refusal to participate were deliberate delays that could no longer be tolerated.
Earlier, the court had dismissed Kanu’s no-case submission, ruling that he had a case to answer and must either file his final written address or commence his defence.

Justice Omotosho emphasized that the court had been fair and patient but would not allow the proceedings to stall indefinitely. If Kanu fails to comply at the next hearing, the court will close his case and proceed with judgment based on the available evidence.
The case, which has drawn both national and international attention, continues to generate debate over issues of fair trial, human rights, and national security.
