Nnamdi Kanu files defence in terrorism trial after court order. Court dismisses FG objections, declares defence documents valid.

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has officially filed his defence before the Federal High Court in Abuja, following the directive issued during the previous court session. The move marks a significant development in the long-running trial between Kanu and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

During Thursday’s proceedings, the court dismissed objections raised by the Federal Government challenging the admissibility and legality of the documents submitted by Kanu’s legal team. The presiding judge ruled that the defence documents met the necessary standards and were valid for use in the trial, ensuring the case proceeds without further delay.

Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021, is facing multiple terrorism-related charges brought by the Federal Government. His legal team has consistently argued that the charges are politically motivated and lack credible evidence, while the prosecution maintains that his activities allegedly pose a threat to national security.

Legal analysts suggest that the acceptance of Kanu’s defence documents could shift the tone of the trial, as the court now proceeds to evaluate the substance of his legal arguments rather than procedural objections.

Meanwhile, public interest in the case remains high, especially across the South-East region, where supporters continue to call for his release and insist on his right to a fair trial.

The court has adjourned the matter to a later date for continuation of the hearing.
