FCT Minister Wike vows to end illegal constructions in Abuja after clash with naval officers blocking an inspection of unauthorized development.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has reiterated the Administration’s commitment to end all forms of illegal land development across Abuja, regardless of the status or position of those involved.

This stance followed a tense confrontation on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, after military personnel from the Nigerian Navy reportedly blocked the Minister and his inspection team from accessing a disputed construction site in the Gaduwa District, along the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Way corridor.

According to reports, the FCT Development Control Department had previously identified the structure as an unauthorized development, lacking both title documents and the necessary building approvals. The site was allegedly linked to a former Chief of Naval Staff.

During the inspection, naval officers allegedly prevented the Minister and his officials from enforcing regulatory action, claiming to be acting under orders. Wike, however, condemned the incident as “an act of lawlessness,” insisting that no individual, including former top military officials, will be allowed to violate established planning regulations.

The Minister emphasized that due process must be respected in land acquisition and development within the FCT. He stated that using military personnel to shield illegal property development is unacceptable and poses a threat to public order.

Wike stated:
“The same standards applied to others will be applied here. Nobody will use authority or status to intimidate the FCT Administration. If there are no valid documents and no development approval, the construction cannot continue.”

He further questioned how a former senior military officer would avoid engaging the authorities through proper channels, instead resorting to the use of armed personnel. Wike affirmed that Abuja must remain a city governed by law and regulations, not by power or influence.

To prevent escalation, the Minister confirmed that he has reached out to the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff, both of whom assured him that the matter will be addressed.

The FCT Administration maintains that all illegal structures across the territory will be halted and removed in accordance with the Abuja Master Plan.
