Gov. Otti Clarifies Rationale for Appointing Dr. Ezinne Chinyere Benjamin-Kalu as ABSUTH Board Chairman

Governor Alex Otti reiterates merit-based appointments in Abia, emphasizing competence over ethnicity, origin, or political affiliation.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has reiterated his administration’s firm commitment to merit-driven appointments, stressing that competence and value remain the only criteria for public service roles not ethnicity, origin, or political alignment.

Speaking on Saturday, April 25, during the wedding ceremony of his Aide-De-Camp, ASP Emeka Charles Ogbonna, at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, the governor emphasized that his leadership style prioritizes performance and capacity above all else.

Governor Otti used the occasion to explain the rationale behind appointing Dr. Ezinne Chinyere Benjamin-Kalu as Chairman of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) Management Board. According to him, the selection process was highly competitive, involving interviews with seven candidates.

He revealed that Dr. Benjamin-Kalu stood out significantly, outperforming other contenders by a wide margin. Her strong international network and professional competence were key factors that influenced the final decision.

Addressing public concerns over the appointment, the governor dismissed speculations tied to political affiliations or state of origin. He made it clear that such considerations play no role in his administration’s decision-making process.

“We are not concerned about party lines or where anyone comes from. What matters is what you bring to the table your ideas, your competence, and your ability to deliver results,” Otti stated.

The governor also highlighted that this merit-based approach extends across all sectors of his administration. From the appointment of permanent secretaries to the recruitment of over 5,000 teachers—and the ongoing process to employ an additional 4,000—he maintained that qualifications and performance remain the guiding principles.

He further noted that this system ensures efficiency in governance and enhances service delivery, as only capable individuals are entrusted with key responsibilities.

Commenting on the wedding ceremony, Governor Otti praised the cross-cultural union between his ADC and his bride, Trinity, who hails from Obudu in Cross River State. He described the marriage as a reflection of unity and diversity, values he believes society should embrace.

He also acknowledged former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, for his hospitality towards guests from Abia during the wedding activities.

The event, chaired by retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Azubuko Udah, attracted prominent dignitaries, including government officials, political leaders, and business executives.
