Nnamdi Kanu files a ₦550m lawsuit against the Nigerian Medical Association over an allegedly fabricated medical report used to deny his bail.
The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has filed a ₦550 million lawsuit against the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and ten medical practitioners, accusing them of issuing a fabricated medical report that negatively influenced his ongoing bail application.
The suit, lodged before the FCT High Court in Abuja, challenges the credibility and legality of a medical document submitted on October 13, 2025. According to court filings, Kanu’s legal team argues that the controversial report which claimed he was “fit for trial” was based solely on informal consultations rather than the comprehensive, court-ordered examination required due to his deteriorating health condition.
Kanu maintains that the report misled the court and ultimately contributed to the denial of his bail, despite repeated concerns about his health while in detention. The lawsuit seeks both damages and accountability, especially regarding what his lawyers describe as a worrying pattern of institutional misconduct.

The development has reignited public debate about professional ethics in Nigeria’s institutions, with many expressing frustration over what they perceive as systemic failures and widespread corruption across sectors.
Meanwhile, in a related move, Kanu’s family issued an open letter to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on November 14, 2025, urging the association to intervene and address what they call the unconstitutional nature of Kanu’s trial, which they argue is being conducted under a repealed law. The family insists that Nigeria’s legal community must act to preserve the integrity of the justice system.

As the case progresses, legal analysts predict heightened scrutiny of the NMA’s processes and the broader conduct of expert witnesses in politically sensitive trials.
