The inaugural edition of the Abia State Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta (ASTEF 2025) concluded in grand style after four days of electrifying contests, unity-driven activities, and impressive athletic displays by institutions across the state. Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) clinched the championship title, topping the medal table with a commanding total of 87 medals.
A Colourful Finale to a Historic Sporting Event
The final day of the fiesta celebrated outstanding student-athletes with medal presentations in swimming and football two of the most anticipated events of the competition. In total, 22 sporting categories were featured, ranging from athletics and chess to kickboxing, wrestling, judo, and various racket sports.
Sixteen tertiary institutions took part in the maiden event, each showcasing remarkable talent and sportsmanship. MOUAU’s consistent performance earned them first place, while Gregory University, Uturu (GUU), and Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, followed closely in the medal rankings.

Leaders Applaud Spirit of Unity and Excellence
The closing ceremony drew several dignitaries, academic leaders, and student representatives. Speaking on behalf of the Governor, Chief of Staff Pastor Caleb Ajagba commended the participating institutions for demonstrating discipline, enthusiasm, and unity throughout the competition.
He emphasized that the true essence of the fiesta extended beyond the medal count, noting:
“This event is not merely about gold, silver, or bronze. It is about building lasting bonds of unity, shared purpose, and understanding among the future leaders of our state. The greatest trophy earned today is the unity we have strengthened together.”
Student Union Government (SUG) representatives from participating institutions also expressed gratitude to the state government for creating a platform that fosters collaboration, friendship, and youth development. They encouraged the continuation of the sports fiesta in future years.
The Commissioner for Tertiary Education and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tertiary Institutions echoed similar sentiments, praising the organizers for delivering a well-coordinated, impactful, and memorable maiden edition.
